How to Choose a Healthy Iced Tea: What Really Matters
Walk through any supermarket drinks aisle today and you'll find no shortage of beverages claiming to be a healthier choice.
From sparkling waters to energy drinks and ready-to-drink teas, many products promise better ingredients, lower sugar, or a more natural alternative.
But once you turn the can around and read the ingredients, those claims can become much harder to compare.
So what actually makes an iced tea a healthier choice?
The answer isn't one ingredient — it's the combination of thoughtful decisions that go into creating the drink.

Start with Real Brewed Tea
The best iced teas start with real tea.
Tea brewed from real leaves naturally contains plant compounds known as polyphenols, including flavonoids. Black tea is particularly rich in compounds called theaflavins and thearubigins, which develop during the oxidation process and contribute to the tea's rich colour, full-bodied flavour, and antioxidant activity.¹
Scientists continue to study the role these naturally occurring compounds may play in overall health. While research is ongoing, choosing a drink brewed from real tea leaves means you're starting with an authentic ingredient that has been enjoyed for centuries.
For us, that's where every recipe begins.
Why Added Sugar Matters
The World Health Organization recommends limiting free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake, with additional benefits below 5%.²
That makes it worthwhile to check the nutrition information panel rather than the marketing on the front of the can.
Some iced teas contain very little added sugar, while others contain amounts similar to traditional soft drinks.
That doesn't mean every sweet drink should be avoided.
It simply means understanding how a drink is sweetened helps you make an informed choice.
Understanding Sweeteners: What the Research Actually Shows
Sweetness can come from many different sources, and it's worth knowing the general shape of the research rather than relying on a marketing label alone.
None of this is specific to any one brand — it's what the current science says about these ingredient categories broadly.
Artificial sweeteners are among the most extensively studied food additives, and major regulators — including FSANZ, the FDA, and EFSA — continue to consider approved artificial sweeteners safe within established acceptable daily intake levels.
At the same time, research on several of them continues to evolve.
Aspartame
In 2023, the WHO's cancer research agency (IARC) classified aspartame as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B) based on limited evidence, while a separate WHO/FAO expert review left the existing acceptable daily intake unchanged, citing insufficient evidence to draw a firmer conclusion.³
Sucralose
Randomized controlled trials in humans have found regular sucralose intake can affect gut microbiome composition and markers related to insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, with effect sizes varying across studies.⁴
Acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) and saccharin
Most research here comes from animal studies rather than large human trials. Rodent studies have found both can alter gut bacterial composition, and one comparative lab study found Ace-K and saccharin reduced microbial diversity more than some other sweeteners tested.⁵
Because much of this evidence is preclinical, it's a research question worth continued study rather than a settled finding in humans.
Naturally Derived Sweeteners and Sugar Alcohols
Sweeteners such as monk fruit, stevia, erythritol, and xylitol have different chemical properties and research profiles from artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, and saccharin.
In the comparative lab study, xylitol and a stevia-derived compound (Rebaudioside A) were found to be less disruptive to gut microbial diversity than some of the synthetic sweeteners tested.⁵
That's where the evidence stands today — not a claim that any sweetener is simply "good" or "bad."
For Golden Hour, we chose naturally derived monk fruit and erythritol as our sweetening blend rather than using artificial sweeteners such as sucralose or aspartame.
